Having leased a workspace to finish her her upcoming book in peace, self-satisfied college professor Marion Post (Gena Rowlands) became an inadvertent eavesdropper to the plights of Hope (Mia Farrow), the desperately unhappy mother-to-be seeking therapy in the adjoining office.
