Description

Yellowjacket marks a breakthrough in Fearing's approach to his craft. He has assumed the mantle of producer for the first time since his early albums and is thrilled at the results. To record Yellowjacket, Fearing set-up shop in the Guelph studio of noted producer Scott Merritt (Fred J. Eaglesmith), who remained on hand as engineer. The album is a richly diverse collection of songs that range from a sweet guitar instrumental ("Whoville") to elaborately arranged sonic journeys featuring strings and female backing vocals ("Yellowjacket" and "Like Every Other Morning") and poignant ballads ("Johnny's Lament" and the dreamy "Goodnight Moon"). As is customary on Fearing records, the supporting musical cast is of the highest order and includes Dan Whitelly (Heartbreak Hill), Jeff Bird (Cowboy Junkies), backing vocalist Suzie Vinnick, Josh Finalyson (Skydiggers) and Fearing's Blackie & the Rodeo Kings band mates Colin Linden, Gary Craig, John Dymond and Richard Bell. Standard Jewel Case. The ability to reinvent oneself during a constant quest for creative progress is a defining characteristic of a true artist. It is one strikingly displayed by Stephen Fearing on his compelling new disc, Yellowjacket. Yellowjacket marks a breakthrough in Stephen's approach to his craft. He has assumed the mantle of producer for the first time since his early albums, and is thrilled at the results. "This was done in the most relaxed way I've ever made a record, and I hear that in my voice and guitar playing. Producing frees you up to be a lot less critical of yourself." Tru Noth Records. 2006.
