On Volume 81 of Hyperion's Romantic Piano Concerto Series, Piers Lane, The Orchestra Now and Leon Botstein perform two very different takes on the romantic piano concerto that were equally successful. Written in 1939 for the World's Fair in New York, the Bliss work is extrovert, exuberant and virtuosic. Rubbra's is a profound reflection on, and continuation of, the English pastoral tradition.
