Since the early 90's Melbourne has been the landing place of choice for musicians from other parts of the country who don't necessarily want to pursue a career within the industry, and who do necessarily want to be a part of something happening. It's a big enough city for it's inner areas to fall into two distinct regions - basically, south of the river and north of the river - and for those regions to play host to quite distinct styles and players. There are enough different and diverse bands for there to be territory skirmishes, competition, debate and factionalism, in the nicest possible sense. All of this is amazingly healthy. And the music that comes out of it is often extraordinary. The Melbourne Water series is the brainchild of Greg Wadley and David Nichols, two people who have played various musician / journalist / label proprietor / advocate roles in the music scene in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne over the years. 'Melbourne Water 2' touches on abstract/noise acts, straight-ahead rock, laidback, electronic, or wistful pop, and other sounds and styles. The collection aims to embrace variety and innovation and to provide a guide to the musical delights Melbourne has to offer. W Minc. 2006.
