Shiftless Paris intellectual Alexandre (Jean-Pierre L?aud) readily strung along his unhappy working-class live-in lover Marie (Bernadette Lafont) as he searched for outside affairs, and found one when he pursued hospital nurse Veronika (Fran?oise Lebrun).
