Pampered tycoon's wife Anne Desbarèdes (Jeanne Moreau) had the tedium of her factory town life ended when she investigated a fatal lovers' quarrel at a neighborhood café. Striking up a chat about the incident with working-class local Chauvin (Jean-Paul Belmondo), the seeds of a relationship she'd come to regret were sown.
