Streetwise Brooklyn tobacconist Auggie Wren (Harvey Keitel) finds his store trafficked by a sequence of troubled souls, from a depressed writer (William Hurt) seeking to help a rescuer (Harold Perrineau, Jr.) track down his estranged father (Forest Whitaker), to his own former flame (Stockard Channing) asking support for the addict daughter (Ashley Judd) she claims is his.
